This is followed by an extensive wooded area: Here you can follow well-maintained hiking trails or stroll along small, winding paths. This is where Karl Liebknecht, nackenschmerzen durch zähneknirschen of the communist party in the Reichstag, called for a peaceful revolution in 1918.

Window Shop Along Berlin’s Prettiest Streets

I’m not sure if window shopping counts as an indoor or outdoor activity, but it’s definitely high on the list of my favorite things to do in Berlin in the winter! 

There are so many great shopping streets in the city, all of which have their own unique charm: 

• Oranienstraße (shown above) — One of Kreuzberg’s main arteries, this is a great place to find vintage and second-hand clothing or shop at local boutiques.

  Now you do. It’s also super affordable.

  Behind the almost leaf-free trees, you will recognise the marina on your right. Here’s another thing that’s the biggest in Berlin:. It’s less frequented because it’s not as close to the city center as some of the other tourist sights, but especially if you can get a bit of light on it, it’s a gorgeous red bridge with prominent turrets.

  Once you see the bridge, be sure to cross and head to the corner pictured below for one of the best spots to get your photo taken with the bridge.

  To the right is the entrance to the Kolkviertel neighbourhood.

  For a lovely winter walk in Berlin with a nostalgic flair, circle the block of flats in the centre of the district in an anti-clockwise direction. It’s an international-level considered on-par with the kind you’d see in Las Vegas.

  Luckily for visitors who don’t speak German, ARISE is also free of dialog, which makes it one of the few shows you can watch without having an extra audio guide on hand.

  Your route along the picturesque, wintry shore starts at Schlachtensee S-Bahn station. But this department store is still pretty damn big.

  Here are some mind-blowing stats about Kaufhaus des Westens (also known as KaDeWe):

  • 40,000-50,000 shoppers pass through
  • 380,000 individual articles are on sale
  • 60,000 square meters
  • It’s 8 floors, including one dedicated to international food
  • The top floor includes a winter garden with a 1,000-seat restaurant
  • Since 2015 it’s been owned by a Thailand-based department store conglomerate 🤔

  Most of what you’ll find in here is quite high-end and expensive, but if you’re on the hunt for a killer cashmere sweater to take home with you – ausflüge herbst hamburg is the fanciest place in Berlin to do that!

  A few of my all-time favorites that I regularly frequent during the winter include: 

  • Saint George’s English Bookstore — Small but mighty used bookstore in the hip Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood.
  • Dussman — Massive bookstore near the Friedrichstraße station with a big English section. You can also extend the walk: For example, you can walk round the Grunewaldsee lake.

    Tip 2: Enjoy modern architecture and greenery

    In winter, the Tiergarten is at its most romantic.

    Make sure you do that on the website in advanceor just show up earlier in the day to buy your tickets in person. Ein Spaziergang führt vorbei an alten Toren, Fachwerkhäusern und der Stadtmauer. It feels like you’re sifting through a garage sale, in the best possible way. 

  Claire’s Tip: Traveling on a budget?

  Today the interior has been refurbished to reflect what life was like during the Wilhelmine era (1890 – 1918).  

• Jagdschloss Grunewald (Hunting Ausflüge kärnten card — A brisk walk through the Grunewald forest will lead you to Berlin’s oldest palace building.

  While I’m not sure this falls under the “fun” title of this blog post, I still felt it was worth sharing.
